Symptoms can affect more than just your head

Concussion symptoms can vary from person to person and may appear immediately or become more noticeable later. An assessment looks at your symptoms, function and how the injury is affecting everyday activities.

01

Headaches & neck discomfort

Head pain, pressure or neck soreness may occur following an injury.

02

Dizziness & imbalance

Feeling dizzy, unsteady or sensitive to movement can affect daily activities.

03

Brain fog & concentration

Some people notice difficulty focusing, thinking clearly or remembering information.

04

Light & sound sensitivity

Bright environments or loud sounds may feel more uncomfortable than usual.

05

Nausea & vision symptoms

Nausea, blurred vision or visual discomfort may occur after a concussion.

06

Fatigue & sleep changes

Changes in energy, sleep or mood may also occur during recovery.

When to seek emergency help

After a head injury, seek emergency care for a worsening severe headache, repeated vomiting, seizures, increasing confusion, unusual behaviour, weakness, slurred speech, loss of consciousness or difficulty waking. Call 911 for an emergency.

How physiotherapy may help after a concussion

After appropriate healthcare evaluation, physiotherapy may help address movement-related symptoms and support a gradual return to activity. Your treatment depends on your symptoms, assessment findings and stage of recovery.

Neck assessment & rehabilitation

Neck pain, stiffness and movement restrictions can occur alongside a concussion and may contribute to symptoms.

Balance & vestibular rehabilitation

Balance and vestibular exercises may be appropriate when dizziness, imbalance or movement sensitivity is identified.

Gradual physical activity

Activity can be progressed gradually based on symptoms, assessment findings and clinician guidance.

Return to daily activities

Your physiotherapist can help guide a gradual return to everyday activity, work or sport where appropriate.

What to expect at your assessment

Your appointment starts with understanding the injury, your symptoms and how they are affecting your daily activities.

01

Discuss

Talk about the injury, your symptoms, medical assessment and activities that have become difficult.

02

Assess

Depending on your needs, assessment may include neck movement, balance, eye movement or activity-tolerance screening.

03

Plan

Your physiotherapist will explain the findings and discuss rehabilitation, monitoring and appropriate next steps.

Recovery is not always about complete rest

Current concussion guidance generally supports relative rest during the first 24–48 hours, followed by a gradual return to light activity as tolerated rather than prolonged complete inactivity.

Activities with a risk of another head impact require additional precautions. Return to contact sport should follow an appropriate return-to-sport process and any required medical clearance.

Recovery timelines vary. When symptoms continue, treatment may focus on the specific problems identified during assessment, such as neck pain, dizziness, balance or activity tolerance.

Frequently Asked Questions

How soon should I see a healthcare professional after a suspected concussion?

Stop the activity and arrange a prompt healthcare assessment. Seek emergency care immediately for warning signs such as repeated vomiting, worsening headache, confusion, seizures, weakness, loss of consciousness or difficulty waking.

Can physiotherapy help if I still feel dizzy after a concussion?

Persistent dizziness can have several causes. An assessment can help determine whether vestibular rehabilitation, neck treatment or another approach may be appropriate.

Can concussion physiotherapy temporarily increase symptoms?

Some assessment tasks or exercises may briefly increase symptoms. Your physiotherapist can monitor your response and adjust the intensity. Significant or persistent worsening should be discussed with your healthcare provider.

Could my neck be contributing to headaches after a concussion?

Yes. Neck injuries can occur alongside a concussion and may contribute to headaches, pain or dizziness. An assessment can help determine whether neck rehabilitation may be appropriate.

Do I need vestibular physiotherapy after a concussion?

Not everyone does. Vestibular rehabilitation may be considered when assessment identifies dizziness, balance concerns, gaze-stability problems or motion sensitivity.

When can I return to work or school?

Return to work or school depends on your symptoms, responsibilities and individual recovery. Some people can gradually resume activities with temporary modifications or accommodations.

When can I return to hockey or contact sports?

Do not return to activities with a risk of another head impact until you have followed an appropriate return-to-sport process and received any required medical clearance.

Is dizziness always caused by the concussion?

Not necessarily. Dizziness can have several causes, which is why an assessment is important. Depending on the findings, vestibular, neck or other rehabilitation approaches may be considered.
